Obituary of Jim Johnston

James (Jim) Robert Johnston, 81, of Hermantown, passed away on March 18, 2024, after a brief stay at Solvay Hospice House due to kidney failure.

Jim was born on August 19, 1942, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Stuart and Grace Johnston. In 1943, he moved with his family from Flandreau, SD, to Floodwood, where he graduated from Floodwood High School in 1960. Following graduation, Jim spent a year working on his family’s dairy farm and at Stephen’s Auto Body before relocating to Duluth where he began a 41-year career at Mount Royal Super Valu.

Jim is survived by his wife, Lucille; sons, Brian (Margarita) of League City, TX, and Bradley (Jeannie) of Hermantown; grandchildren, Kyle (Hannah), Dirk, Alena, Angelique, Blake, Courtney, and Mackenzie; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Don, George, John Johnston; and sister, Peggy Koland.

He had a love of the outdoors, gardening, fishing, hunting, basketball, hockey, bowling and traveling. Jim and Lucy were married for 60 years and visited all 50 states, most Canadian Provinces and Mexico.

He loved to volunteer and served as President of the Hermantown Hockey Association, coached baseball, taught hunter safety courses, supported the First Harvest Food Bank, and was a proud member of the Grace Garage Guys.

Services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Hermantown, 5454 Miller Trunk Hwy, on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. Visitation at 10:00 a.m., Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon immediately following.
